The benefits of reformer Pilates

Strength, control and range — and what to realistically expect.

The benefits of reformer Pilates

Reformer Pilates gets described in big terms online. We'd rather be precise about what it actually offers and what's realistic to expect.

Strength without heavy load

The springs provide resistance without putting a heavy weight on your spine or joints. You can work hard, and the effort is spread across the whole movement rather than concentrated at one point.

Control through the whole range

Because the carriage moves in both directions, the return matters as much as the push. You learn to slow a movement down and own it, rather than letting momentum do the work.

Balance between sides

Many exercises work one side at a time. That tends to reveal differences between your left and right that are easy to miss elsewhere, and gives you a way to work on them deliberately.

A practice that adapts

The same machine can be set up to support a beginner or to challenge someone who has trained for years. An instructor changes spring settings throughout a class, so the work can meet you where you are on a given day.

Breath and attention

Reformer work asks you to coordinate breath with movement. Many people find the concentration involved is part of the appeal — it's difficult to think about anything else for fifty-five minutes.

What to realistically expect

Changes tend to show up gradually: in how a movement feels, how you stand after a long day, how easily you move. They depend on how often you come, how consistently, and what else is happening in your life.

We don't promise specific results, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What we can offer is small, coached classes where an instructor is paying attention to how you move.

If you have a specific condition

If you're managing an injury, pain or a medical condition, talk to your doctor or physiotherapist first. Our clinical sessions are designed to work alongside their advice, not replace it.

Reading is not the same as doing.

Small groups, springs set for you, and an instructor who keeps correcting you all hour.
