Pilates during pregnancy
Trimester by trimester, with your doctor's clearance in hand.
Many people continue to move through pregnancy, and Pilates can be one way of doing that. Every pregnancy is different, though, and the most important person in this decision is your doctor — not us.
Start with your doctor
Before your first session, talk to your doctor or midwife about whether Pilates is right for you, and at what point. We ask for written clearance before any prenatal session, and we'll plan around their advice.
How sessions are adapted
Prenatal sessions at Life Pilates are adjusted as your pregnancy progresses. Positions, spring settings and pace change from week to week. The emphasis is on comfortable, supported movement and steady breathing rather than intensity.
Telling your instructor
Let your instructor know how far along you are at the start of every session, and tell them straight away if anything feels uncomfortable. You're always free to stop, rest or skip an exercise.
Small groups and private sessions
We offer prenatal work in small groups and in private sessions. Private sessions give the instructor more room to adapt everything to you, which many people prefer, especially later in pregnancy.
After the birth
Returning to exercise after giving birth is its own process, and it runs on your body's timeline, not a calendar. Wait until your doctor has cleared you to move again. Our postnatal sessions offer a patient, staged return, beginning gently and building gradually.
What we won't tell you
We won't make claims about what Pilates will do for your pregnancy, labour or recovery. What we can offer is careful, attentive instruction within the guidance your doctor gives you.
Getting started
Bring your doctor's clearance to your first session, and tell us when you book that you're pregnant or postnatal. We'll take it from there.
